Lesson 4b: 1930's Canada, Part II
The United States
Like King, Pres. Hoover was unprepared & took much of the blame (shantytowns = "Hoovervilles")
He was defeated in the 1932 election by F.D. Roosevelt.
FDR supported a new theory: Keynesian Theory - Government should spend to improve the economy
Many were skeptical - sounded like communism
He introduced a program called "The New Deal", which created public work programs & regulatory agencies; improving confidence
Protest Parties
Politicians wrestles with "laissez-faire" vs. Keynesian Theory
People, growing frustrated; were willing to accept non-traditional alternatives
From this grew new parties, referred to as "Protest Parties"
Usually have rural origins, grew out of discontent.
1935 Election
Bennett was unable to end the depression, and even tried his own "New Deal" reforms.
Liberals campaigned under the slogan: "King or Chaos"

Federal-provincial relations grew strained
Outside of Canada, tensions started to grow.
War was on the horizon.
